Beginner BJJ Classes
Beginner BJJ is the on-ramp to the art, and a good beginners' class is built entirely around people who have never trained: the coach breaks down the core positions, a basic escape or two, and — just as importantly — how a class actually runs, so nobody is thrown in the deep end. You do not need to be fit or flexible to start, you do not need any gear for a first class (most gyms lend a gi), and hard rolling is not part of a true beginners' session — when live practice does come, tapping early and often keeps it safe. Expect to drill technique with a partner, expect to be a little lost your first time (everyone is), and expect a room that remembers being new. If nerves are the thing holding you back, this is exactly the class designed to melt them — just leave your ego at the door. The 4,604 gyms below offer beginner BJJ classes — use the map to find the closest one, or browse by state.
