From the reviews

My Daughter trained 9 years at UMA. White belt to first degree black belt. Earned not bought. The training and discipline received is amazing and life changing. This is a real dojo. There will be blood sweat and tears as they progress, as well as friends for life.

★★★★★ — Matthew, Jul 2024

My son has been part of this dojo since June 2023, starting with karate and adding jiujitsu in January 2025 when he turned 8. Over this time he’s grown so much in skill, discipline, and confidence.

★★★★★ — S, Sep 2025

Our daughter started at 4 years old now about to turn 6. She demonstrates courage among her peers and has always been excited about going to her karate class and always makes sure she says bye to sensei after every class. Love to see her take on a discipline with her peers and build her courage.

★★★★★ — Nicholas, Nov 2025

This Karate school is the best in Phoenix in my opinion. Sensei is very kind and has tons of patience with the kids he teaches. His wife Monica is very sweet and kind, their kids also train and help out with the classes.

Your first BJJ class at Ucelo Martial Arts Phoenix

Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

BJJ is a contact sport. Ease in, tap early and often, listen to your coaches, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
