From the reviews
I’m in the area visiting family for the holidays and wanted to get in a few rolls. After reaching out through their website, Coach Matt responded within minutes, which was awesome. I dropped by for the Saturday open mat and was immediately welcomed with open arms.
Moved to Oneonta recently, found this gym, and from then on, went three days a week. The instructors here are practical, fun, experienced, and welcoming. Unbelievably happy with the experiences I had. All of the students were also insanely cool, people aren't here to destroy each other, everyone is here to learn.
Best gym in the tri-state area hands down. Having trained in a few gyms, I love the culture of this gym. The coaches are amazing, and so are the teammates. Everyone treates you like a brother, none of that toxic gym attitude you may find in other gyms. Matt and Wyatt are doing an amazing job.
OJJA is an amazing place to train for all ages. Our three children (ages 7-13) all attend classes and have learned so much. Students leave each day with new skills and a level of confidence that is valuable on and off the mat.
Your first BJJ class at Oneonta Jiu Jitsu Academy
Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
