From the reviews
My son is 6 years old and I am amazed at how much he loves the instructors. He is learning so much and leaves with a smile after every class. I highly recommend!!
We came to Makoto a little over a year ago and have loved it. My son enjoys coming every week. The classes are spread across the week and allow the flexibility to come at different times and days based on your child’s age group. Great staff that is super encouraging and dedicated.
My son just had his first class today and let me just say that we will definitely be returning. All of the instructors were so great with the kids. Jerry Minerva was VERY welcoming as soon as we walked in the door. I loved how he knew my sons name and treated him so nice.
This is definitely a place to bring your little ones too! I have been saying for a while how much I'd like my son who's 5 to join a karate class. I really thought it would give him the skills to be more patient, aware and learn how to be a good sport! It did all of those three things.
Your first BJJ class at Makoto Jiu Jitsu
Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
