From the reviews
I dropped into the 5 AM Gi and 6 AM No-Gi classes at Coastal BJJ in Destin, FL, and I couldn’t have had a better experience. From the moment I walked in, I noticed the mats were freshly cleaned and the environment felt genuinely welcoming—everyone here knows each other, and it shows in the positive energy on the mats.
Coach Kyle is a fantastic teacher who truly cares about his students' progress and safety, but isn’t afraid to make you work and train hard! The gym is clean and everyone there makes it a super supportive and friendly atmosphere.
Today my 5 yr old son had a trial session and he enjoyed it! Kyle has a welcoming approach and allowed my son to feel less intimidated as the new kid. He explains the moves/techniques in a way kids can relate and understand. I think that’s awesome!
I am on vacation with my family. I checked out the schedule online, and Kyle promptly sent me a text. He gave me multiple options on when I could drop in. I picked a 5am class ( so I didn’t interfere with my family plans lol). There was a great class on single x followed by some very fun live rounds.
Your first BJJ class at Coastal Jiu jitsu
Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
