“His instruction is technical and detailed, and he's really good at linking a series of techniques together while providing the bigger picture understanding of "why".”

From the reviews
Before I write my actual review, if you are looking to training here and see some of the negative reviews, these are from people who were asked to leave the gym after and are not remotely accurate. This gym has been like a home away from home for me!
Rob and Kellie are top notch professors but even better people. I've had the opportunity to train with, travel with and compete with my Checkmat teamates at Freedom Jiu jitsu Lynchburg...along with some awesome seminars. If your ever in the Lynchburg VA area stop in. We would love to see you.
I went to Checkmat LYH and was immediately welcomed by an amazing group of people! Coach Rob, Kellie, and the other members of the gym were so helpful and patient with all the questions I had. I was only able to go for 2 months before graduating but in those 2 months the members became like family!
This is the place to train if you live in Lynchburg or the surrounding area. If you're passing by while traveling, this is where you should train. Professor Rob is extremely knowledgeable and has amazing jiu jitsu.
Your first BJJ class at Checkmat Lynchburg Jiu Jitsu
Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
