From the reviews
White Dragon Martial Arts in La Mesa is not only a wonderful academy but an amazing community of kind talented instructors. Our nine-year-old son is thriving and enjoying his lessons and has grown so much in the past few months. Thank you so much to Sifu Luis and the entire team at White Dragon Martial Arts!
White Dragon is truly a family. Our children have been training here for quite sometime now and it’s the most encouraging and motivational martial arts studio we’ve ever been to.
This school has changed my life, in a positive way. I was looking for a way to overcome my depression and decided to try with martial arts. In 2 years, I see an enormous improvement in the way I deal with my mental issues.
My son attended martial arts here for a year, and though we’re sadly leaving due to time constraints, I wanted to take a moment to truly appreciate Mr. Navarro. He has been an outstanding instructor—always bringing a positive attitude, great energy, and incredible patience, especially with my 6-year-old son.
Your first BJJ class at White Dragon Martial Arts - La Mesa
Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
