From the reviews
My 8 year old son was diagnosed with ADHD and finds it very hard to focus or find a sport that can keep his interest. Waverly jiu-jitsu has been and absolute blessing that we didn't know we needed.
I have been bringing my son for almost two years to train with Coach Matt. My son lacked confidence, was shy and is small for his age. Jiu Jitsu and Coach Matt has been the other anchor and guide for my son besides myself over the last 15 months due to contentious civil litigation over his custody which I now retain…
My son and daughter both attend classes here and they love it. They are learning self-defense and having some fun in the process. The owners are very professional and always making sure safety is a priority. My daughter was very shy and unsure about joining, but now she hates to miss a class.
My 6-year-old daughter, and 4-year-old daughter started training with Coach Matt 6 months ago. It has been a great experience! My girls look forward to Thursdays specifically because its "jiu-jitsu" day. You are welcomed from the moment you walk into the door and are immediately greeted by Tammy and Matt.
Your first BJJ class at Waverly Jiu-Jitsu
Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
