From the reviews

I have had the pleasure to work with both Master Keith and Kim. Kim has a personal, fun and ‘kick your but’ way of running her classes. She caters her classes to her individual students and can modify or challenge for students of ALL ages. I can’t wait to get back … as soon as my crazy schedule calms down.

★★★★★ — Celeste, Oct 2019

The instruction here is of such High Quality. Master Keith takes a lot of time to give personal instruction and takes the time to break down techniques into individual parts which is so helpful because I retain it so well that way.

★★★★★ — M, Aug 2023

Master Keith is very careful with his students and sensitive to their needs (for instance, if a woman does not want to spar with a guy, he respects that, but encourages her to do so for the experience). He covers a broad range of self defense moves, plus a mixture of classes with Krav, Karate and Ju Jitsu.

★★★★★ — Kate, Oct 2023

After one year of classes, my mental and physical health have significantly improved. The non-competitive, supportive environment makes VSMA ideal for every person who walks through those doors. Master Keith is always willing to find a way to make a technique work despite some of my limitations.

Your first BJJ class at Valley Shore Martial Arts, LLC

Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

BJJ is a contact sport. Ease in, tap early and often, listen to your coaches, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
