From the reviews
I moved here from New York City where I joined this class a couple of months ago. Let me tell you what, I'm so glad I finally decided to try BJJ. I was nervous about joining the class, but they were so welcoming to the newcomers. Look, I'm a 90lbs, and this class has taught me how to do self-defense.
SSBJJ has everything you’d want in a BJJ dojo. A super inviting and safe environment; top notch instruction; fun, challenging rolls; and a palpable desire to elevate the individual athletes and the sport as a whole. I was beyond impressed with what Dave has built.
I am training more than a year in this GYM and is just magical. Pretty safe place to learn, to laugh, and specially makes you feel like in family. Professor Nate, Dave, and Brett are amazing and always very kind, always trying to help you in every doubt that you have.
Great school with skilled, coaches and mentors, and patrons of all skill levels. Great place to roll and/or study Jiu Jitsu.
Your first BJJ class at Steamboat Springs Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (SSBJJ)
Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
