From the reviews

Hands down, this is the best place to train if you truly want to learn real mixed martial arts. Raiz MMA Academy is not one of those schools that simply hands out belts or promotions without real effort. The training here is world class, and you cannot come in and half commit.

The owner & instructor, Leo, is awesome! He is great with the kids, and the kids all love him. You can tell that he genuinely loves teaching. He is patient and encouraging. It is obvious that he truly cares about his students. Being in the school feels like being part of a family.

★★★★★ — Coragami, Dec 2021

Leo is a fantastic and very patient instructor. I really enjoy his encouragement to the kids. The kids listen and improve fairly quickly. It is an exciting and very positive environment of learning and discipline. My son loves how fun the classes are. The space is always safe and clean.

★★★★★ — Desiree, May 2022

Having two special needs boys I was worried about not giving them the tools to defend themselves from bullies and life. But not anymore since they started training I seen their confidence grow with Professor Leonardo and Luiza. They have patience with all the kids in the class. Would recommend them to anyone.

Your first BJJ class at Raiz Jiu Jitsu Sarasota

Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

BJJ is a contact sport. Ease in, tap early and often, listen to your coaches, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
