Affiliated academy — reviews and the gym's own info point to a recognized BJJ lineage or affiliation (think Gracie Barra, 10th Planet, Renzo Gracie, Alliance, Atos or Checkmat). If lineage matters to you, ask which affiliation the academy belongs to and under whom the head instructor earned their black belt.

The classes they run
“This is a great jiu jitsu club, my two kids have been going for about two months, and have experienced several different teachers, they are so great.”
“To each their own, but for me, the detail-oriented, self-defense-focused, magic-like jiu-jitsu is why I love it.”

From the reviews
I found Park City Jiu Jitsu through a Google search and feel so lucky to walk into the gym I did. I initially joined to improve my endurance and to exercise and while I received those things I’ve gained so much more!
I am a mid-tier, mediocre blue belt who loved the school (Pedro Sauer lineage) I trained at for years before moving to Utah. I tried a lot of schools and never found a good fit. Finding Park City Jiu-Jitsu was like finding water in the desert. Here’s what I personally look for when it comes to jiu-jitsu: 1.
This BJJ gym is a truly a gem. Mike Diaz is incredibly knowledgeable and experienced. He takes Jiu-Jitsu very seriously and he has a visible passion Jiu-Jitsu as a sport and for self defense. All of the instructors do a fantastic job. Three kid's classes are rigorous and taken seriously, but still fun.
My 4 boys and husband go to Park City Jiu Jitsu. The teachers are all so amazing. They teach great teamwork, confidence, how to not be bullied, and not be a bully. We have enjoyed this gym so much.
Your first BJJ class at Park City Jiu Jitsu
Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
