From the reviews
I've had a great experience with this school. The instructors are patient and willing to explain when you have trouble with a new concept. You don't have to already be an athlete to start learning either. They will meet you where you are and help you improve and meet your goals.
This is the best martial arts school! The discipline is great, the instructors are amazing, and it is such a great place to make friends. My son has learned so much here! I would definitely recommend this school to learn martial arts and succeed at it!
My child has been taking jiu jitsu classes with MPMA for the last couple months and has loved the experience. The instructors do a great job of demonstrating the skills they are teaching and directing the students in learning.
My daughter and my husband take class here. My husband has been going for about a year. And my daughter started last September. Our goals for this program have been meet. My husband is living a more active lifestyle and my daughter is hitting small but progressive steps into her self defense journey.
Your first BJJ class at Mt. Pleasant Martial Arts
Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
