From the reviews

We recently started my 5 year old at Lone Star Black Belt Academy and we all love it! The instructors are so amazing, they take the time to ensure not only that us parents are knowledgeable but that the kids are understanding of what is being taught and with so much patience and care.

Our son, who has Autism, has had the ability to learn & participate at Lone star black belt academy like nowhere else. He has been attending this dojo since 2011. The personal & character growth we have seen in him, as a direct result of working with Sensei Jackson & his team, has been phenomenal.

★★★★★ — Jason, Oct 2018

LSBBA is an amazing place where kids from so many different diversity come together. Master Jackson, Jennifer and the leaders teach along side families; respect, discipline, the meaning of winning and the reasons for loss. He teaches that it’s okay to be different.

★★★★★ — Tori, Aug 2021

I have seen so much improvement in my son since we started here two and a half years ago. He is now a more respectful, mature, and motivated kid. We all love all the instructors! They take their time to know each kid and make sure that each kid is doing well. This school is so much more than just martial arts.

Your first BJJ class at Lone Star Black Belt Academy

Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

BJJ is a contact sport. Ease in, tap early and often, listen to your coaches, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
