From the reviews
Professor Larry is not only a kindhearted and virtuous man, but an incredibly educated, respectful, and articulate instructor. He's the kind of person who will sacrifice an entire weekend of his time in order to help support a cause he believes in, all while asking for nothing in return.
My son and I have been training at Hendo BJJ for almost four years now, and it’s truly become a second home for us. What sets it apart isn’t just the solid foundation in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu passed down through the Gracie lineage, or even Professor Larry’s 30+ years of experience—it’s the culture.
I have been going to Hendo BJJ for seven months now. This gym was suggested from a friend. I signed up after the first class. I’m happy to have found a great gym to start and continue to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Professor Larry is awesome and such a wealth of knowledge to say the least.
I absolutely love being able to train at this gym. The atmosphere is amazing, Professor Larry is a wealth of knowledge and really cares about individual progression and safety. I learn something new or improve something every class.
Your first BJJ class at Hendo BJJ
Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
