From the reviews
Evan Gideon is a great instructor. He teaches Jiu Jitsu with easy to understand instructions. He makes sure he answers any questions and utilizes other black belt instructors to help teach class. The other students are all very respectful and no one comes to the mat with arrogance. Everyone is welcome.
Brown belt here- dropped in. Trained at a great many gyms and this one has jits nailed. Uplifting atmosphere for all, clean/spotless, superb communication and teaching skills. The guys I sparred with showed real confidence and spark. Definitely an exceptional destination. Also watched part of a kids class.
Where to even start? The classes are awesome no matter your skill level. You can walk in off the street and walk out knowing something new. Talking about walking in, the "first class" experience is great. No matter how awkward you may think you'd feel, it's not. The coaches AND students are super friendly.
I have been training here regularly for almost 6 months and though I've not been to the other schools on the island, it's because my research led me here and I found my home. The lineage (GFTeam) is intact and traceable all the way back to Maeda(who taught the first Gracie).
Your first BJJ class at Galveston BJJ
Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
