From the reviews
I am truly blessed to have found such great instructors. My son is very shy & mildly autistic, the instructors took the time to gain his trust and help him start participating. They make sure all children are involved and enjoying the class!! Awesome choice!
I have been training at Galvans Gracie Humita BJJ school for several years. I can honestly say Professor Manny Galvan and Professor Martha Galvan are highly trained and very professional. Their school gives off a family vibe and they welcome all who want to train. So if you’re interested it is never too late to start.
My son loves going to this school. Master Manny, Coach Martha, Coach Cristian and really all of the coaches/staff are pretty amazing. They are very structured and promote discipline but at the same time you can tell that they value making a connection with each of their students.
I am 34 years old and had never been an athlete or kickboxer, so while the classes were tough the instructors understood and worked with me! Very clear instruction, and lots of experience and knowledge was on display in the classes.
Your first BJJ class at Galvan's Martial Arts in Brownsville
Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
