From the reviews

Passing through town, traveling for work, and I decided to stop by tonight. I’ve been training in the Rigan Machado system for 2-1/2 years. This gym is great. The culture is very laid back and the people are super friendly. Professor Ururahy, a Roberto Traven black belt, is very warm and welcoming.

I truly love this gym and all the people that train here. Professor along with everyone (Bjj Bros) that train here helped me in so many ways. In 5 months this gym helped me lose nearly 100lbs and I’m loving it. My body feels better and my mind feels healthier. Thank you URJ BJJ.

This place is awesome!!! Where do I even begin. I started training here back in January, new mom, no martial arts experience. I wanted to learn BJJ for self defense and just to start something new. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I love it! I have felt so supported every step of the way!

I just went to watch the class as I was traveling. I am having hip surgery soon and just wanted to be around the jiu jitsu. Professor Rodrigues had me jump in and told me just worm up. Then he had me just do the techniques “to see what I can do”. “ don’t live in the pain” he told me. Nothing to prove.

Your first BJJ class at Chess Lab Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

BJJ is a contact sport. Ease in, tap early and often, listen to your coaches, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
