From the reviews

Our family absolutely loves this jiu-jitsu gym! Both of my kids, one in middle school and one in elementary, started here as complete beginners, not just to jiu-jitsu but to sports in general. From day one, the coaches have been incredibly inclusive, patient, and encouraging.

I have nothing but great things to say about CEV. The coaches are positive and encouraging. They push the students to do their best and be their best on and off the mats. They have high expectations for the students and model respect and kindness. The class is structured so the class time is utilized to the fullest.

My son has been going to the CEV after school program for 2 years now and he absolutely loves it. He start the jiu jitsu classes this past summer and it was the best decision we made. He says some of his best friends he met there. Then, the coaches are absolutely amazing. They are so compassionate and supportive.

I’ve been driving past this place for a long time. I finally built the courage up to go in to ask questions. I was looking for Jiu Jitsu lessons. I have a background in Kempo and Hopkido. They made me feel welcome and actually taught me a thing or two about close contact grappling.

Your first BJJ class at CEV Jiu Jitsu

Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

BJJ is a contact sport. Ease in, tap early and often, listen to your coaches, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
