From the reviews

Simply the best experience visiting this gym and completely worth the drive from LA or San Diego. Gene, aka BJJ Moses, is the most gracious host. We connected on Instagram after I spotted his outstanding videos for gray haired grapplers.

I enrolled my daughter here at the end of summer. She’s 5 and is apart of the littles class (4-6). Since being apart of the team she’s gained so much self confidence. She has amazing instructors who are extremely patient and work very hard with all of these kids 4-5 days a week to make sure they perfect their goals.

I feel like a broken record. I started by bringing my son here back in 2021 when he was 6. I sat on the bench and watched (doing my best not to interfere from the sidelines) the professors, Asa Russell and Sal Spinelli, always do a great job of teaching the kids, being mindful of their attention spans, and making sure…

We’re in town for work and brought the family on this trip. My son signed up for a FREE Week at Carlson Gracie in Wine Country. I was able to meet one of the instructors Asa; He introduced himself to us and made us feel at home. Our son has taken part in the classes for 3 nights & he’s had the greatest experience!

Your first BJJ class at Carlson Gracie Wine Country Jiu Jitsu

Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

BJJ is a contact sport. Ease in, tap early and often, listen to your coaches, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
