From the reviews
I’ve been a student at Carlson Gracie Gilbert since i was 11 years old. I am now turning 16 this year and I could not imagine training at any other gym. During these past five years at this academy I not only learned jiu jitsu, I learned valuable life lessons from Professor Alex and Alecia that I will remember for the…
I can’t say enough good things about Carlson Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu! For over 3.5 years, we’ve been bringing our son here, and we absolutely love the structure and discipline they instill in their students. From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed and part of a supportive community.
My whole family trains here and we love it! (Family of six). I love that I can come in the morning and train with my husband and then bring my kids by later in the afternoon for their classes (ages 14-5).
My daughters and I have been attending this academy for over 6 years. Over that time this academy has become a second home for all of my family. As a protective father, I love the facts that students are challenged daily and that my daughters have developed a significant amount of grit.
Your first BJJ class at Carlson Gracie Team AZ
Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
