From the reviews

Allen has been attending classes for 6 months or so, and we couldn’t be happier with the entire staff they are always there to help. It’s been a blessing finding a coach like Kru he’s one of a kind. The entire team helps Allen grow and learn new techniques. You’ve got to check this place out!

My then 12 yr old son started Jiu Jitsu classes in May 2022 when the school first opened. He learned self defense moves and also experienced participating in competitions. Muay Thai started being offered in September 2022 and he wanted to also start training. He ultimately decided to solely train in Muay Thai.

★★★★★ — Rachel, Oct 2024

My son has been here 3 times now and joined a year membership. Kru and Chewy are fantastic with him as a beginner. He was in tae kwon do for 5 years at TKD Wellness and decided to try a few different places. They made him feel right at home here.

★★★★★ — Brandon, Jan 2024

My son has been attending Carlson Gracie since their grand opening! He absolutely loves it. He has made friends that have become like family and his confidence has grown so much! He has matured and has learned self defense and discipline.

Your first BJJ class at Carlson Gracie East Tucson ( Brazilian Jiu Jitsu )

Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

BJJ is a contact sport. Ease in, tap early and often, listen to your coaches, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
