From the reviews
This was my first experience with training any Martials Arts and I'm glad I chose this facility to train. The classes are great for both learning self defense and getting into shape. The best part is everyone is very welcoming and excited to meet new students.
Amazing Jiu Jitsu Club! I had no sort of background in Jiu-Jitsu or wrestling or Combat Sports whatsoever, I've never exercised regularly in my whole life, and yet I started coming to class here and I ended up loving it!
This place is truly special. If you are searching for a place to learn self-defense you are in the right place. But you’ll quickly find the Club is more than just the martial art of Jiu-Jitsu. It’s a family here. Everybody is trying to help each other improve; not just on the mats, but in life.
The club has a welcoming vibe and a focus on Jiu Jitsu for self defense purposes. It is home to a mix of older and younger participants, at a range of different skill levels. Professor Steve is excellent - both in terms of skill and teaching ability.
Your first BJJ class at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club of Michigan
Nervous about walking into a BJJ gym for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good coaches expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic positions and escapes with a partner — not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many gyms lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi (or a rashguard and shorts for no-gi) and a mouthguard. Live rolling eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
